Los Doce Soles (zodiacales) y el Sol Central

Posteriormente al artículo de ayer sobre el simbolismo de los números Doce y Trece, que relacionábamos con el zodíaco  y con la dialéctica Tiempo/Eternidad, encuentro hoy en facebook esa preciosa joya del segundo milenio antes de Cristo, que representa la idea del mismo modo que yo la había dibujado ayer. Eso para constatar una vez más la perennidad de los arquetipos (los “símbolos fundamentales de la ciencia sagrada”, tal como los llama Guénon) y las casualidades de la vida, que mejor dichas son sincronicidades o “resonancias mórficas” (Sheldrake). Para el comentario del simbolismo (que va más allá de las interesantes sugerencias de los  arqueólogos) remito al artículo anterior de ese blog.

Se trata de un pendiente de collar babilonio, cuya descripción copio a continuación de la página facebook “Mesopotamia”:

“Necklace pendant, 17th–16th century b.c.; late Old Babylonian period. Mesopotamia. Gold./ Diam. of largest medallion 1 3/8 in. (3.6 cm). Fletcher Fund, 1947 (47.1b)

These gold pendants and beads were said to have been found at Dilbat, a modern town near Babylon, along with four cylinder seals and three granulated gold cylinder seal caps. Exemplifying the finest craftsmanship in gold from the ancient Near East, (…) the disk with rays emanating from a central boss represents Shamash, the sun god; and the forked lightning is the symbol for Adad, the storm god. The two disks with granulated rosettes may be symbols of Ishtar, goddess of love and war represented by the planet Venus. Necklaces with similar symbols can be found on the figures of royal personages in later Assyrian wall reliefs and probably served as both jewelry and talismans.

It is difficult to date the Dilbat hoard because the technique and imagery employed were known throughout the first half of the second millennium B.C. Similar gold disks with extensive granulation have been found in a tomb at Ebla in western Syria and in a private house at Larsa in southern Mesopotamia. Other objects in the hoard seem to have been made earlier and kept for centuries. It is possible that such a hoard would have been gathered and kept by a jeweler, who would have use for such materials.
